Born in 1981, I first picked up a camera at age 5 and I later became a graduate of the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University in New York, NY. A few years after graduating, I established a "private client photography" practice in NYC. For over five years, I worked for subjects and hosts--not so much for editors and publishers. Promoting my work on social media and cultivating relationships of trust while evolving my "staged candid" style, my work was in demand by public figures, entertainers, and candidates for elected office around NY. I enjoyed the privilege of working private events featuring world leaders and globally famous individuals.
In 2014, after 32 years of living within the 30-mile locus of New York City, I moved over 1,000 miles away. Around then, per my tax filings, I became a software engineer and research consultant. As the founder of Competitive Advantage Research, I began using campaign finance data publications to turn my previous political photo subjects into my new research subjects as I started by analyzing the donation records corresponding to events I myself had attended and staffed as a photographer. So it has been over a decade since I shared photos with everyone.
My photography has always been my true body of work, however. Living at a lower cost-basis than NYC offers and drawing my taxable income in technology rather than photography ultimately gave me a platform to produce new photographic work in various destinations all around the world. Arguably, I am taking more photos now than I did when photography was my main source of income. I am sharing this new work here for the first time.
Perhaps there is a closet in your house with boxes or albums of old photos, all jumbled up. In thinking about how to present these photographs to you, I decided against the clean, over-organized approach of navigable galleries-within-galleries, and I wanted to offer the experience of pulling out those boxes, opening them up, and being surprised by what you find. This work reflects my curiosity about the world, my engagement with my surroundings, and the things I wish to remember. Otherwise I don't have much of an artist's statement because I'd rather the work speak for itself.
While I have thrown in some of my favorite portraits of recognizable subjects from back in the day, all of the other work here was made between 2020 and . The collection spans every continent (including Antarctica) and is presented at a reduced resolution for the web. If you like any of these in particular, get in touch! I would be thrilled to work with you on enlarging any image(s) and printing them for you as wall-ready decor on acrylic, canvas, framed paper, glass, metal, and/or wood.
